Macaws

Macaws are one of the most intelligent birds around.  They are large and colorful parrots native to Mexico, Central and tropical South America.

Macaws are very sociable and highly active creatures that need plenty to keep them busy. If you fail to provide you Macaw with enough stimuli it can cause your pet to have physical as well as mental anguish and suffering.

There have been recording of Macaws living up to 100 years, however the average life span is generally about 50 years.  Macaws are one of the few animals that when they mate it is for life and this carries over into captivity as they show a tendency to bond more with one person.

Captive macaws have been seen to act up in a way that can be a bit nerve wracking for you and is not healthy for them.  This behavior sometimes includes screaming, biting and feather plucking.

Although screaming and biting may be something that they do when in the wild as a form of communication and warning, they do not normally pluck their feathers and it is thought to be because of inappropriate surroundings and life in captivity.

The Severe Macaw is a little smaller than some of the others and is mostly green in color.  They are generally easier to train than their larger counterparts.  They are also more reasonably priced that the other types as well.

The most recognizable is the Blue Gold Macaw.  Their colors are vibrant with wings that are blue green and a belly and chest of vibrant yellow.

Another very popular macaw is the Scarlet Macaw.  Their plumage is a beautiful bright red.  This magnificent bird is considered to be the most intelligent of the Macaws; due to this they need to have extra stimulation to keep them happy otherwise the can become very aggressive.
